The Big C

My dad and mom used to say that during their youth and even in their middle age, cases of cancer were somewhat rare. They said that the disease came of age only in the last thirty years or so.

They were possibly not accurate in terms of how recent this disease came about but I tend to agree with them in terms of the rarity of cancer in the days of their youth.

Lifestyle and environmental influences may have something to do with this, along with what people refer to as family predisposition and chronological age.

In any case, an email which I got from recently says that one third of cancer types are curable, and another one third is preventable. This means that we really need to have that annual medical check-up because early detection will really save lives.

The info that was sent to me says that smoking is possibly one of the main causes of cancer. It sounds incredible but it says that there are about 4,000 harmful chemicals in every stick of cigarette. Ang isang hitit daw ay 600 times more harmful than inhaling exhaust fumes from the EDSA buses. Mabuti na lang graduate na ako sa yosi.

Some foods that may be carcinogenic are barbecued food, lalo na yong may mga sunog na sunog na karne, including deep fried food. Foodstuff that contain a lot of preservatives like salt and nitrates which are abundant in canned products, salted eggs and sausages are also culprits. When we eat bread with molds (amag) our body reacts by secreting toxins that may lead to liver cancer.

Warning: don’t eat bread that has been kept in room temperature for more than two days. Bread can last longer in the freezer and can be reheated when its time to serve it.

It is good to have regular exercise, three times a week, if possible, to the extent that we are able to perspire and breathe deeply. Choose the type of exercise that fits your age. Ok lang ang golf, pero hindi puwede ang gulp; ok din siguro ang bedminton.

We must also ingest about 25 grams of both soluble and insoluble fiber daily. Let us not forget to drink at least one and a half liters of plain water everyday
