Goin’ Donut

March 4, 2007

Mister, Dunkin’, GoNuts – these are just some of the names that go with them, and many people seem to have developed a liking for them. Fortunately for me, I learned about them somewhat early and so I have done my best to avoid them.

I am, of course, referring to none other than your favorite donuts, whether in their original form, or in small balls.

One article that I read recently classifies donuts among the five worst foods that we can eat. The article repeats what I have read a long time ago – donuts are high in trans fatty acids, they are cooked in high temperature and they are high in sugar content. All these contribute to chronic inflammation.

Inflammations are described as symptoms of degenerative diseases, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and arthritis. Common triggers for these are daily doses of junk foods and processed food.

Also part of the list of five is French fries which also have high trans fatty acids and cooked in high temperature. Along with high glycemic index, these five worst foods constitute a cocktail that can trigger inflammatory reactions.

Next on the list are cookies, crackers and commercial pastries which have hydrogenated fats. Read labels well to make sure. Potato and corn chips, including tortilla chips are part of the list because these are usually high in trans fatty acids, oils which are high in Omega 6 and high glycemic starches. Too much Omega 6 in relation to Omega 3 oils may lead to long-term diseases.

And the last may be a real bomb – soft drinks, bottled teas and fruit juices. These are supposed to contain high amounts of fructose corn syrup which trigger the inflammatory response. It has also been found that aspartame (artificial sugar from wood alcohol) in diet soft drinks may cause migraine, asthma and immune disorders.

Masasarap pa naman lahat!

Kaya lang, the Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention reports that women with breast cancer have higher levels of trans fatty acids stored in their bodies. In fact, high levels of trans fatty acids increase the risk of breast cancer by some 40%!

It is believed that sugar in high-glycemic food is responsible for 50% of skin aging, because this releases free radicals.

I am now looking for some materials on the better or best foods para makabawi naman tayo.
